Often, in religious communities like the one you described people don't think they know any queer people, and so it's easy to "other-ize" them. When they already know you and like you, and then find out that you're queer, there's a lot of cognitive dissonance that people have to work through. Some will fall back on what they think they should believe, but others will have to reconcile that someone they know and care about is gay, and is also a good person, and that maybe what they thought they believed isn't true.<br /><br />But that can also be exhausting, especially since not everyone will accept you for you. It sounds like you're still looking for a spiritual community, so I'll throw out a denomination to look into: the United Church of Christ (UCC). It's a pretty liberal denomination that supports LGBTQ+ very strongly, even encouraging people who so identify to go into the clergy (though in fairness I should say that it is a very diverse denomination, and the church I grew up in, in rural Ohio, was much more conservative than the denomination as a whole). The Unitarian Universalists are also great people, but not, strictly speaking, Christian, though they welcome Christians.
